Elementary Update

Dear UCE Families,

I hope you and your family are managing to stay safe and healthy during this unprecedented time. If you would have told me that my first year as a principal would include a pandemic resulting in state wide school shutdowns, and stay home orders, I would not have believed you! Yet, this is the situation we find ourselves in. The staff at UCE and I are missing you very much. We are looking forward to the time when our hallways are again filled with laughter, smiles, and lots of hugs!

Today, as we begin our journey into Crisis Distance Learning, I have become very aware that UCE is not just a building. It is people. It is trusting and caring individuals who have been working very hard to make sure your student will have everything he or she needs to continue learning. I have seen staff, all  of whom are new to crisis distance learning, reach out to each other to share technology support, creative ideas, and stories of how excited they are to connect with students.

To help provide a consistent and easily accessible resource, UCE teachers will be utilizing a program called ThinkStretch. This includes a hardcopy student workbook and parent manual, both of which will be distributed along with student iPads and other learning materials on Thursday, April 16th. The learning in the workbooks is focused on the skills and standards most important for your student as he or she transitions to the next grade level. Teachers will be supporting this learning with short instructional videos as well as other supplemental learning resources. Supplemental learning will also be made available to students via the apps they are already familiar with on their iPads. Internet accessibility has been added to the student (football field side) parking lot outside of the high school. You may stay in your vehicle for your student to utilize the school internet, access or download apps on their iPad.

You will be hearing from your child’s teacher and other staff members on a weekly basis. (Please note staff may be using personal phones to make calls, so the number may show up as blocked on your phone.) We understand we are asking you to take on more when many of you are already juggling your own work schedules and changed family dynamics. Please know that our focus during this time is continuing the relationship your student has with his or her teacher, while allowing them to feel connected to school, their teacher, and to their peers.

I am looking forward to working together with you as we navigate through this uncertain time. I am confident that our comeback will be much stronger than this setback!

Yours in Education,

Mrs. Johnson

MHSAA Statement on Covid 19

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has directed all member schools to suspend activities in all sports for all seasons– effective Monday, March 16 through at least Sunday, April 5 – to fall in line with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s order that all schools close for the next three weeks in order to deter the spread of COVID-19.

All athletic activities to be halted include practices, scrimmages and competitions/games, as well as strength training, conditioning and any other organized sessions and activities in all MHSAA in-season and out-of-season sports.

The suspension of activities applies to sports for all three MHSAA seasons as Spring sports practices have begun, Winter tournaments were suspended Thursday and Fall sports coaches are working with limited numbers of athletes during the offseason.

“By suspending all sports activities for the next three weeks, we are taking an additional step to maintain safety and minimize risk first, and also keep a level playing field for our schools and teams during this time of uncertainty,” MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl said. “A number of schools across the state already were making this decision, and setting this as the standard across our membership is appropriate especially given the quick pace with which this situation is continuing to evolve. Given the rapid, fast-moving and unprecedented events of this week, the MHSAA will use the time during this all-sport suspension of activities to evaluate all options and next steps which will be shared with schools in a timely manner.”

Updates will continue to be posted as necessary to the MHSAA Website at https:// www.mhsaa.com/coronavirus.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic Update

Good Afternoon Union City School Families:

I am writing to acknowledge that our landscape is changing quickly in response to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic.

Of course, this raises many questions about the school calendar, spring break, and when students will return to school.

These are genuine and relevant questions to ask.  As your superintendent, I want to have answers to these questions, as well, so I can share them with you.  At this point, I cannot provide all of those answers but will share with you what we know at this time. I also ask that you remain patient as we, and schools across the state, take time to understand, adjust, and respond to these new dynamics as the world around us changes faster than we can anticipate.

State-wide School Closures – March 16-April 6

As you probably already know, last night Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that in order to slow the spread of COVID-19, she is ordering the closure of all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, starting Monday, March 16th until Sunday, April 5th. School buildings are able to reopen on Monday, April 6th.

Pre-School & Daycare Programs

Community Unlimited Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) and Branch and Calhoun Head Start programs will also be closed for the three weeks.

Spring Break/ End of the Year

There are 11 counties in Michigan that share the same spring break time period that we have, which is April 6th through April 10th.  Unless we are mandated by the Governor or the Michigan Department of Education, Union City Schools will be keeping those dates as our spring break.  We know that many of our families have their vacation plans already in place and it would be a financial hardship on them to cancel plans at this time. Currently, we do not know if we will be required to make up days at the end of this school year.  Those decisions have not been made or shared with us from the Michigan Department of Education or the Governor’s office.

Breakfast & Lunch Programs

We are working to provide breakfast and lunch for students. More information will follow when available.

Athletics & Extracurricular

All sporting events, practices and extracurricular events have been cancelled for the next three weeks as well.  We want to keep our students and families as safe as possible.

Enrichment Activities

Our staff is working hard to provide opportunities so our students can engage in learning while school is closed. The elementary teachers are working to prepare packets to help your student keep his/her learning active. The high school and middle school teachers may be sending out activities through Google Classroom that can be utilized at home.  Please encourage your student(s) to stay engaged with learning.

Building Closures

Our buildings will be closed to the general population starting Monday, March 16, 2020.  We realize that students may have left items that they need from their lockers and/or classrooms.  The buildings will be open tonight Friday, March 13th until 6 p.m. and tomorrow morning from 9-11 a.m. in order for students to collect any items they may need over the next few weeks.

Thank you for your support and know that I will communicate through email, robocalls, and Facebook with additional information as it becomes available.
